Hydrotherapy - how it can help you

Have you heard of hydrotherapy?

No, I'm not talking about colon hydrotherapy! I mean constitutional hydrotherapy, a traditional naturopathic treatment method that has a wide range of benefits. Most of the time when I mention hydrotherapy to people, they have no idea what I'm talking about. So, here's the rundown on this powerful therapy:

Hydrotherapy can be used to treat many acute and chronic conditions, providing benefits like:

  • Prevents and shortens duration of colds and flu

  • Enhances ability to heal

  • Relieves chronic pain, stress, and fatigue

  • Improves sleep

  • Reduces inflammation

  • Improves digestion

  • Supports detoxification

Here's how it works: In a hydrotherapy appointment, you briefly meet with a doctor that checks your vital signs and approves the treatment. We then give you privacy undress from the waist up, put on a robe, and lie on a treatment table covered with warm blankets. At specific time intervals, the doctor will come in and place either warm or cold wet towels on your chest and abdomen. Halfway through the treatment, we have you turn over and put towels on your back. While the towels are on you, we allow you to relax (many people even fall asleep). If appropriate, we also use gentle electrical stimulation (called sine wave) on your abdomen and your back. This is a painless addition to the treatment that improves digestion and tonifies the organs.

The result of alternating hot and cold (plus electrical stim) on the body in this way stimulates the body's own healing mechanisms by increasing circulation, relaxing the nervous system, strengthening the digestive system, stimulating the immune system, and improving detox and elimination processes.

This gentle yet powerful therapy is a great tool to use in treating many conditions - AND it's very relaxing, so it makes a great addition to your self care routines! The benefits of these treatments are cumulative, so we see more improvement every time you get it done. Depending on your situation, you may be prescribed a series of hydrotherapy treatments over a specific time period to supplement your treatment plan and speed up your healing time. We can bill most insurances for this service and I'm very excited to be able to offer this for you! We will also have treatment package options available to help those paying out of pocket.

So, if you feel an illness coming on or if you want more options for treating chronic conditions, get yourself scheduled for a hydrotherapy treatment!
